Samsung Heavy Industries Nigeria Celebrates Egina FPSO First Oil

Samsung Heavy Industries Nigeria Limited (SHIN) is proud to announce the successful achievement of the first oil on Egina Floating Production Storage Offloading (FPSO). The FPSO achieved first oil on December 29, 2018 after the successful completion the mooring, hook-up and required offshore commissioning of the vessel. With all these accomplished, the high-list portion of the Egina project has now been completed. Production from Egina field which is estimated at 200,000 barrels per day at peak will increase Nigeria’s current crude oil production by 10%.

Since Egina FPSO arrived at its offshore location on August 29, 2018 from SHI-MCI fabrication and integration yard in Lagos, SHIN has worked towards successfully achieving this challenging goal of achieving First Oil in 2018, as agreed by all parties.

Samsung is confident of successfully completing the remaining offshore commissioning works and final handover of Eginal FPSO to Total along with its partners (NNPC, CNOOC, SAPETRO and PETROBRAS) on schedule. This will be achieved through close co-operation and support from all NIMASA, NIS, and DPR; along with the highest levels of Safety and quality control.

It is worthy to note that Egina FPSO project broke a number of records during construction. It is the first ever project to meet Nigeria’s new standards for local content following the NOGICD Act. Parts of the FPSO were flown to Samsung’s headquarters in Korea to be installed in the early stage of construction of the Egina before it was sailed to Lagos for final construction. Also, the FPSO mooring was completed well in advance - completed on September 17, 2018 against target date of September 23, 2018.

This success story has been made possible through Samsung Heavy Industries’ belief in the potential of Nigerian companies and workers to deliver high standard services. Over 9.7 million hours of time have been spent by the Nigerian workforce, with over 6,000 Nigerians in employment on the project at its peak through Samsung and its partners and subcontractors.

The New-build FPSO contract was a turn-key project in which SHIN covered the entire engineering, design, procurement, construction, transportation and commissioning. We are confident that this would give us more competitive edge in future offshore project orders in West Africa including Nigeria.
