Samsung Heavy Industries Nigeria's Lagos shipyard expands services following new lease from Nigerian Port Authority on Samsung's Lagos Shipyard

In a significant new development, Samsung Heavy Industries Nigeria (SHIN) has been offered a land lease by the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) for the SHIN shipyard in Tarkwa Bay, Lagos. The new direct lease agreement opens up opportunities for more international projects, partnerships and an expanded service offering for world-class USD 300 million shipyard, an investment made by Samsung.

The new agreement provides SHIN with a strong foundation to continue its leading fabrication and integration activities for the west African oil & gas industry. The certainty of a direct lease means SHIN will develop full multi-purpose terminal operations and expand its operations to include one-stop logistic services to customers. The new agreement permits international ocean-going vessels to berth directly alongside the 502m wharf and discharge their cargo using Africa’s largest capacity travelling tower crane. The yard will handle the transportation of container cargo, vessel maintenance, supply of utilities, storage space and will facilitate crew changes.

“I am pleased that the Nigerian Port Authority has entrusted us with a direct land lease for our existing fabrication and integration yard in Tarkwa Bay. This gives us the certainty to continue investing in Nigeria and will attract significant new international projects for the benefit of all stakeholders. It symbolizes the faith and belief the Nigerian government has in Samsung in our mission to attract more commercial opportunities to Nigeria. Through our business expansion, it has become certain that we are able to provide wider skill transfer and employ more Nigerian workforce, which will ultimately contribute to the development of Nigerian economy”, said Mr Jejin Jeon, Managing Director of Samsung Heavy Industries Nigeria.

Mr. Jaebum Kim, CEO of SHI-MCI FZE, operator of the yard, said he looks forward to welcoming more national as well as international business opportunities due to the new license. “We are expanding our offering to include full terminal operations including marine logistics and container services in addition to our core fabrication and integration capability to better serve the regional maritime industry,” Mr Kim said.

The SHIN fabrication & integration yard delivers marine services, ship maintenance, repair and manufacturing to the regional maritime industry. The flexibility of its facilities allows it to accept all kinds of seagoing vessels and conduct a wide range of operations. The yard possesses international ISPS and ISO certification and is a fully secure facility. The strategic location of the yard will also save customers costs on tugboat operation time.

The new license was issued directly to SHIN by the Presidential Standing Committee on Private Jetties (PSCPJ), under the auspices of the Honorable Nigerian Minister of Transportation Mr Rotimi Amaechi.
